Fine Art on Carved Leather
I have been producing a variety of leather orientated projects for over thirty five years but the production of art on highly detailed carved leather has become a special interest of mine.
Collectable art on carved leather from my studio are either my own creations or they are individual custom works which have been crafted to each client’s specific requirements.
What is a carved leather work of art ?
The subject's of the work, for example, the animals, trees, rocks etc, are first traced onto leather. The drawing is then carved into the leather with a specially designed knife, the outside edges of each subject are then bevelled down to create the 3D effect following which the fine details are modelled into the leather.
Once all the tooling is complete the work is then coloured with stains (dyes) or painted with high quality acrylic paints to give an attractive natural look to the piece.
The beauty of a collectable fine art piece on carved leather is that, depending on the subject, you can actually feel the wrinkles on the rhino’s face, the texture of the elephant’s skin, the details of an aeroplane or the eyes of the person in a portrait.
Please note that these works are not mass produced. The drawing, carving, modelling and staining / painting are all intricate and time consuming procedures. There is therefore a distinct limit to how many I can produce in any one year.
I endeavour to ensure that every piece is there to provide years of enjoyment. This is accomplished by the work commanding the attention of the viewer and to then become an interesting talking point - especially with regard to the three dimensional feel of the leather and the finely detailed modelling of the subjects.
Although I am constantly updating and introducing new works, the pieces currently featured in the Gallery are a representation of my current range, and the website will be regularly updated as and when new works become available.
Over and above the works shown, I welcome the opportunity to carve to the clients design – you may, for example, have a special photograph of an animal in a game park - and I would in this instance supply you with a drawing of the suggested layout, the exact sizing of the piece, an estimated date of completion and a price for our mutual agreement.
My wildlife works are a celebration of animals in their natural habitat. My wish is that they may be seen as a brief journey into nature's captivating beauty which will provide the viewer with a momentary respite from our fast paced world.
World famous private game reserves such as Mala Mala, Londolozi and Lion Sands display my pieces which have been sold to clients in Europe, North America and Australia.
Through requests from clients I have recently expanded my range of subjects - to include Portraits with the first being of Nobel Peace Prize winner Nelson Mandela and General Art with a Tiger Moth bi-plane which is a vintage aeroplane of the Royal Air Force and a very detailed Colt .45 revolver.
