The Fine Art Carved Leather Pictorial
Not only is a fine art carved leather pictorial a beautiful and collectable piece, but it is also an object to touch and admire.
To produce the carved leather pictorials I only use hides which are imported from Argentina - in over thirty years of leather carving I have yet to find a leather which is more suitable for carving, modelling and staining.
My work includes but is not limited to:
One of a kind custom made pictorials of virtually any subject of your choice, once off or in a series, for example,
- Endangered wildlife species, for example, African (cheetah, rhino, elephant) or North American (bison, mustang).
- The Big Five of African game, ie, lion, rhino, elephant, buffalo, leopard.
- Various scenarios featuring one specific species, ie, elephant/s in various situations, for example, threatening to charge, actually charging, in a herd, with their young, etc.
- The Magnificent Seven big tusker elephants from Kruger National Park, for example, SHAWU, DZOMBO MAFUNYANE etc.
These pictorials are all available in small, medium or large sizes or to suit the client’s exact requirements.
Small ......+/- 18” X 22” (45cm X 55cm)
Medium ..+/- 24” X 28” (57cm X 67cm)
Large ......+/- 29” X 35” (73cm X 87cm)
Reproductions of my stock items which may or may not have variations to suit your particular requirements, for example, the Rhino Pictorial as seen in the Gallery may have featured:
- One or two rhino in the same or a different pose,
- White or Black rhino,
- With Mount Kilimanjaro in the background or a “koppie” (small rocky hill) such as found in the African bushveldt.
My work never tries to emulate a photograph of the subject/sl. The effects I set out to achieve are firstly to provide the unique third dimensional look and feel that only carved leather can provide and to then provide a somewhat understated colouring effect. I believe that this process preserves the natural look of the leather and enhances the overall effect.
This is especially evident when working with animals such as rhino or elephant where the use of the stains augments the natural look of the skin texture of these animals.
At all times my work will ensure that the leather is seen as the medium that I am working on. For this reason I only utilise acrylic paints very sparingly as they tend to overpower the leather and I will only utilise them to achieve a specific effect such as snow on a mountain or the white markings on a mustang.
Each art leather carved pictorial is supplied with an interesting Background Story on the subjects of the pictorial, for example the "White Rhino’s and Mount Kilimanjaro".
